We support the legitimate demands of the strikers and put the responsibility of protecting their lives on the relevant parties
In order to achieve the deprived rights of all citizens of the Kurdistan Region, on (25/1/2025) twelve teachers and employees in front of the UN Representation in Sulaimani, announced a hunger strike and in a memorandum sent to the United Nations, presented their demands. This hunger strike, which is a form of civil resistance against oppression, indicates that the strikers have not seen any way out until now, and therefore, they are using this method as a mechanism to protest against the injustices and inequalities they have faced, as they are prepared to sacrifice themselves for a dignified death in the face of their demands.
We as civil society organizations, while expressing our support for the legitimate demands of the strikers, we turn to the relevant parties: the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Federal Iraqi Government, the United Nations and the consulates of all countries represented in the region the strike has been going on for six days today and the situation of the strikers is deteriorating. We put the responsibility of protecting their lives on the relevant officials and authorities. Because what we see is that this authority has been as careless and indifferent as in the past، and now، after six days of the strike of teachers and employees، it has not taken any action and has not visited them or responded to them with a single word.
At the same time, to bring the demands of the strikers and to make this organization of this civil movement to the forefront, we call on teachers, officials, doctors, governors, workers, Peshmerga veterans, students, youth, and all the citizens and researchers of Sulaymaniyah to respond to their demands, visit the strikers, and support them. At the same time, we demand that this civil movement, similar to the strikes of 1991, not be limited to Sulaymaniyah and extend to all cities and towns of the Kurdistan Region, to find ways to create widespread civil pressure and exit from the crisis that the Kurdistan Region has fallen into, so that in this period of despair, hope can be restored to the citizens and a new identity for the Kurdish people can be established, and the unity of the citizens of the region can be strengthened, it is necessary to adopt all forms of civil struggle.
Sincerely,
February 2nd, 2025
