The spokesperson for the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq indicated that it is still undecided whether the registration window for political entities and candidates will be reopened. This decision depends on the ruling of the Board of Commissioners. Additionally, the date that the Kurdistan Region Presidency sets will impact the decision on whether to reopen the registration process.
Jumana Ghalai, spokesperson for the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq, stated: “After finalizing the initial registrations by the High Commission's board and considering the latest ruling of the Federal Court, we have resumed our operations in our offices to conduct the parliamentary election process in Kurdistan. We are awaiting the response from the Kurdistan Region Presidency regarding our proposal to hold the elections on September 5, 2024.”
She further explained that reopening the registration for independent candidates, political entities, and alliances requires a special decision that must come from the Board of Commissioners. Whether or not the registration window will reopen depends on the decision of the Commissioners' Board. Only those who have already registered may participate if the window does not reopen.
The spokesperson highlighted that they have proposed September 5, 2024, for the parliamentary elections, but the final decision lies with the Kurdistan Region Presidency. The date set by the Presidency will also affect the decision to reopen the registration window. If a date is set close to the end of the Commission's current term, reopening the registration may not be feasible due to the time needed to review and approve the nominations.
