On May 19, 1992, 32 years ago, the first election to establish the Kurdistan Parliament took place. This was the first general election in the Kurdistan Region after the Kurdish uprising against the Ba'ath regime.

In that election, 100 parliamentary seats were contested, with an additional 5 seats reserved for the Assyrian minority, making the total number of seats 105. Parties needed to secure more than 7% of the votes to gain a seat. During that election, 178 polling stations were set up.

On June 4, 1992, Jawhar Namiq Salim was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament, and Dr. Fuad Masum was appointed as the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region.

Now, 32 years after the first session of the Kurdistan Parliament, the current parliament has been inactive for over a year beyond its legal mandate. Elections are expected to be held this year, but the exact date of the next session remains uncertain.

The PAE (Progress and Development Institute) has been monitoring the parliamentary proceedings and has published several reports on the previous terms of the Kurdistan Parliament. In their latest report, they plan to release a special report soon, highlighting the current state and challenges faced by the Kurdistan Parliament.
